Professional Support for Independent Case Managers

Reflect. Support. Grow.

Independent case management brings many benefits, but it can also mean fewer opportunities to reflect on complex cases, discuss clinical reasoning and access structured professional support.

At SJ Rehab, I provide confidential, practical support for independent case managers who want dedicated space to reflect, an experienced clinical perspective or the opportunity to learn alongside professional peers.

As an Advanced Registered Practitioner Member of BABICM, IRCM Registered Case Manager and Registered Nurse, I have benefited from supervision throughout my career. I understand the value of having a trusted colleague who can support reflection, explore different perspectives and help strengthen professional reasoning.

Whether you are looking for ongoing professional supervision, an independent review of a complex report or the opportunity to reflect alongside professional peers, there are three support options available.

One-to-One Professional Supervision

A confidential and supportive space to reflect on your practice, explore complex cases and consider the professional issues that arise within case management.

Sessions can include clinical reasoning, risk, professional boundaries, ethical dilemmas, workload, wellbeing and professional development. The focus is shaped around your own practice and the areas you would find most valuable to explore.

What's included

  • A 90-minute confidential online supervision session
  • An agreed supervision framework covering the purpose, format and confidentiality arrangements
  • Access to the SJ Rehab Supervision Handbook and Guide
  • Dedicated time to reflect on anonymised cases and professional practice
  • Exploration of clinical reasoning, risk, professional boundaries and ethical dilemmas
  • Identification of learning needs, professional goals and agreed actions
  • A structured supervision record designed to capture the information set out in the IRCM Professional Supervision Policy, including the areas discussed, learning, agreed actions and professional goals
  • Space within the record for your own reflections and how you intend to apply your learning in practice
  • Flexibility to arrange individual sessions or ongoing supervision at an agreed frequency

When arranged at the required frequency, one-to-one professional supervision can form part of a registrant or pre-registrant’s arrangements for meeting the IRCM supervision requirements. Responsibility for ensuring individual registration requirements are met remains with the supervisee.

Clinical Sense Checks

An independent clinical review of your reasoning, recommendations and conclusions before a case management report is finalised.

A Clinical Sense Check focuses on whether your recommendations are evidence based, proportionate, clearly justified and consistent with the information contained within the report.

It complements administrative proofreading by looking beyond spelling, grammar and formatting to consider the clinical rationale behind your recommendations and whether your conclusions are clear and defensible.

What's included

  • An independent review of your case management report
  • Consideration of the clinical reasoning supporting your recommendations
  • Review of whether your conclusions are evidence based and proportionate
  • Identification of gaps, inconsistencies or areas requiring clarification
  • Consideration of whether your recommendations are clearly explained and justified
  • Professional feedback following the review

A Clinical Sense Check is not a proofreading service and does not include rewriting the report on the case manager’s behalf. Responsibility for the final report and recommendations remains with the author.

Peer Group Supervision

Structured, confidential supervision within a small group of up to four independent case managers.

Each session includes a planned topic relevant to case management practice, alongside time to discuss anonymised cases, explore professional issues and consider different perspectives. Keeping the groups small allows everyone meaningful time to contribute and helps create continuity and trust.

What's included

  • Four 90-minute online sessions over 12 months
  • A consistent group of no more than four independent case managers
  • An agenda circulated before each session
  • A planned reflective topic relevant to case management practice
  • Time to discuss anonymised cases and professional issues
  • Shared reflection and learning from experienced peers
  • Access to an optional group WhatsApp for general peer support between sessions
  • A written supervision record following each session
  • Space within the record to add your own reflections, learning and intended actions
  • Confidential Zoom sessions that are not recorded

The WhatsApp group must not be used to share client-identifiable information or detailed confidential case material.

Peer Group Supervision provides additional opportunities for reflection, shared learning and CPD. It does not replace the minimum one-to-one professional supervision required under the IRCM Professional Supervision Policy.

Interested in professional support?

If you are interested in any of these services or would like to discuss which option may be most suitable for you, please contact SJ Rehab today for an informal discussion.
